Ulpan:
Hebrew Language Study in Israel

An immersion Hebrew language study program in Israel - an ulpan - is one of the best ways to learn to speak Hebrew.

An ulpan is a total-immersion Hebrew language course. Israel designed these types of courses for new immigrants. They're meant to teach the maximum of Hebrew in a minimum of time.

A variety of summer or year-long programs exist for people who want to come to Israel and learn Hebrew the Israeli way. The benefits, of course, are that you get taught in a classroom setting, by an Israeli teacher, and visit Israel at the same time.

Some ulpan courses are much like summer camp. Others, like the one I took at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem one summer when I was in college, require intense work that doesn't leave very much time for touring.

These programs aren't cheap – in addition to the course itself, the price has to include room and board for a month or two, or a year, and you have to add in the cost of airfare and any touring you might want to do.

On the other hand, an ulpan in Israel is a great way to learn Hebrew. You'll share in a bonding experience that many Israel immigrants go through and leave confident that you've learned to speak Hebrew well enough to live here.

In fact, maybe you'll love it so much, you'll decide to stay!

If you aren't able to get over to Israel just yet, or not for long enough to take an ulpan, you might want to consider learning Hebrew online, with an Israeli teacher, in the comfort of your own home. Check out the Rosen School's online conversational Hebrew course.
