The Bloomfield Science Museum
The coolest Jerusalem museum
If you like science museums – you’ll love the Bloomfield Science Museum. Unlike many science museums that cater mostly to older teens and adults, this is one of the best kids’ museums I’ve seen anywhere and definitely makes my list of top kids activities in Jerusalem.
If you’re going to take your children with you through umpteen archaeological sites, then do them a favor – when you pick a Jerusalem museum to visit, make it the Bloomfield.
The fun starts at the entrance, where a large stone ball spins in a fountain – without going anywhere.
Step into the entrance courtyard, and you’re immediately challenged with an array of visual illusions that confuse your brain. You could easily spend an afternoon in the courtyard alone, playing tricks on your mind and eyes, and never set foot in the museum itself!
Do go inside, however. This place provides an amazing array of interactive exhibits and activities for kids of all ages. The center of the main floor is dedicated to Israeli children’s literature, with science activities set up to illustrate different events in various Israeli children’s classics. The activities are so cool that it won’t matter if you’ve never heard of the stories matched to the exhibits (I hadn’t, and loved them anyway – they were just so much fun!)
The power of pulleys is a theme running through most of the museum and at various points you’ll find elevators in which kids can easily lift their parents, and a carousel, complete with horses, where children can take turns riding the bicycle that makes it turn, while the other kids ride the carousel!
Kids can also play on a harp strung with light beams, spend hours in the game room or doing research on the computers. Done with that? Try creating your own lighting bolts – how cool is that?
The Bloomfield Science Museum definitely gets our vote for coolest Jerusalem museum!
