Dear,Happy Jerusalem Day From Jerusalem!Photo by Y. Garinkol, cc-by-2.5
Today, we celebrate Jerusalem Day!This day commemorates the reunification of our city in 1967, after nineteen years of having been divided by barbed wire and conflict.Today, Jerusalem is a bustling metropolis, an ancient holy city, a vibrant start-up hub and an archaeologist’s dream, a place of religious freedom for people of many different faiths and life journeys. It is a place we are grateful for and so today, we celebrate! Since the possibility of coming to explore Jerusalem in person is a bit limited for now, with the travel restrictions still in place, we thought we'd put together some suggestions for exploring our lovely city from the comfort of your own home or lock-down location. What's Jerusalem Day all about? Find out here. Next, let’s have a sing along! Or at least, a retrospective of the Jerusalem song: Yerushalayim Shel Zahav - Jerusalem of Gold, with performances of the song to suit every taste and musical style. And finally, for some inspiration, some thoughtful reflections on the reunification of Jerusalem from Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. We hope this brought some joy and music to your day. No Time Like Now to Learn Hebrew - Free ResourcesIf you’ve been searching for something worthwhile to do while in lock-down, this is the perfect time to learn Hebrew at home. Then, when the travel restrictions finally end, we’ll be able to meet again in Jerusalem and greet each other with Shalom!Normally, we’d suggest the Rosen Schools amazing online courses which are taught live by some of Israel’s best language teachers. Unfortunately, their website has been hacked, and is temporarily unavailable. (You can check out our review of the classes here, in case you’re thinking of joining them when they are back and running.) In the meantime, though, you can get the course that the US Foreign Service designed and uses to teach its diplomats Hebrew quickly — and it’s free! Get the textbook and all the audio files by following the links on this page. There's even a nifty pronunciation checker to help you know if you're pronouncing things correctly. These are serious courses that work, if you stick with the program. (I’m using the Italian course now and my kids used if to learn French.) If you need to start with something a little more exciting, then check out Duolingo’s free app here. It’s a lot of fun. Shalom, peace, and blessings for good health from Yerushalayim, Myriam P.S. Please consider making a donation to our charity fund for disabled children in Jerusalem. Your donation, however small, will help provide much needed services, therapy and medications for severely disabled children in Jerusalem. They need help now more than ever. (Please note that the donation link is at the end of the page about our free Western Wall Prayer service, which we can no longer offer at the moment because access to the site is restricted due to the lock-down. While of course we are still praying here in Jerusalem for the well-being of all, we look forward to being able to return to the Wall very soon.)
